Maier UK, the Spanish-owned automotive supplier based in Burntwood, Staffordshire, has expanded its workforce from 200 to 270 following an investment of £8.5m, £1.12m of which came from the Regional Growth Fund supported by Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.
The investment has allowed the company to develop an innovative new painting process in conjunction with Cranfield University which provides a high-gloss scratch resistant surface for its products. This new formulation is also less energy-intensive to produce and has additional environmental benefits.
Sales and marketing manager Paul McArdle said: “We identified that the trend in Western Europe was towards the luxury and premium end of the automotive market, and we had to invest in order to take our products to the next level. Without this investment these new products for UK car manufacturers would have been made in our Spanish factory, not right here in Burntwood”.
Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership’s chairman, David Frost CBE, added: “Maier UK’s success is an excellent example of the way that the private and public sector are working together in our region to encourage investment in new technologies and raise skill levels”.
Maier UK manufactures automotive plastic parts and is a Tier 1 supplier to companies including Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover, where it provides components for their luxury Infiniti and Range Rover brands respectively.
